there is something for the outdoorsman in everyone. Located southeast of Santiago, this canyon is an ideal and affordable location to experience the foothills of the Andes Mountains. This destination is most popular for camping in the warmer spring and summer times of year, although there are plenty of seasonal winter activities available as well. The location is great for a full day’s trip if you would like to take a hike or have a picnic, but with just the simplest of camping gear you can comfortably spend the night and take more time exploring the Andean foothills.

There are a number of ways to get to Cajón del Maipo. Many rent a car or use a collectivo– a scheduled taxi collective. One of the easiest ways to get there is by metro and bus. Use metro station Bellavista, La Florida or Las Mercedes. From either station, take bus number seventy-two in the direction of San Jose de Maipo all the way to the end of the line.

 

For some family-friendly activities, look into visiting the various aquatic centers at campgrounds in the area. There are several beautiful pools accompanied by camping and picnic areas and other features from zoological centers to restaurants, to observatories. Campgrounds can also be found near waterfalls with plant life that adds a tropical flair to this mountainous region. Kids enjoy the exploring at campgrounds like these.

A more adult option for cooler weather is a visit to the famous hot springs located throughout Cajón del Maipo. Known as baños, they can frequently be found with changing rooms and other amenities. These are often the end-goal of or a stop on beautiful hiking trails. They may appear muddy, but the mineral deposits are actually quite clean feeling and good for the skin. Hot Springs in their more natural state are called termas, and can also be found on day hikes of easy or moderate difficulty.

In terms of hiking, the options are nearly endless. A popular hiking destination is the Monumento Natural El Morado. This protected area of the canyon is brimming with incredible mountain views, lakes, and fields of wildflowers. Other similar historical and preserved areas include Parque Río Olivares and Embalse al Yeso. Some can also be reached in guided groups on horseback. Natural glaciers are popular destinations for experienced hikers looking for a challenge.

For the most adventurous travelers, a number of adrenaline-inducing activities are offered in Cajón del Maipo. Seasonal skiing, snow-shoeing, trekking, rafting, zip-lining, and even bungee jumping are all offered as memorable ways to have fun and enjoy the scenery.

If your visit to Santiago falls in temperate weather, a day trip to Cajón del Maipo is particularly necessary. If you love camping and go on a regular basis, it is worth packing your tent for a night or two out of the city. Do not let any lack of equipment deter you though- a trip to this canyon is one of the most easily accessible and memorable ways to experience the natural wonder of the Andes.
